Write down the terrain you really drive
Graded gravel, sharp rock, deep mud and sand pose different questions. Estimate how frequently your truck encounters each. The most aggressive-looking tire outside the trailhead may not suit a long daily highway commute.
For mixed road and trail use, compare products within the all-terrain category. BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3, Falken Wildpeak A/T4W and Toyo Open Country A/T III are examples to investigate, not a claim of equal performance.
Compare construction as carefully as tread
Passenger and LT versions can differ in construction, load range and weight. Similar dimensions do not make them direct substitutes. A higher load-range letter is not automatically an improvement on every vehicle.
Tell the installer about towing, passengers, cargo and suspension modifications. Ask for a load-capacity and inflation assessment for the application. The tire sidewall’s maximum number is not a substitute for the correct vehicle inflation guidance.
Understand the consequences of going larger
Outside diameter affects more than appearance. It can change gearing, physical clearance and the relationship between indicated and actual speed. Extra width can introduce clearance problems while steering or articulating the suspension. Wheel offset changes the picture again.

Evaluate snow and ownership costs separately
Some all-terrain lines carry 3PMSF, but that does not make them equivalent to a dedicated winter tire on ice. Consider the winter requirement separately from the trail requirement.
Get the complete size, service description and construction on the invoice. Read the applicable warranty for that version. “Up to” mileage coverage often reflects differences across the range.

Are mud-terrain tires better than all-terrain tires?
They serve different terrain and can introduce road-use compromises. The appropriate choice depends on your actual driving.
Is a larger tire always better off-road?
No. Clearance, gearing, load, wheel compatibility and the terrain all matter.
